Opinions about Identities and Group Belonging in BDSM

Opinions and views on BDSM creating identities and group belonging.

Some people indulge in various activities, e.g. BDSM, as a way to find an identity or a belonging to a group, combined with either an attraction to the sensations of the activity or just an acceptance of them.

People seeking identity may choose their very own variant of the activity, or adapt one they know or believe suits them, in both cases stating their preferences strongly as part of defining their identity.

People seeking group belonging almost always choose a pre-formulated variant of the activity, already adopted by other people, but still stating their preferences strongly to define the group from others.

In many cases the variant of the activity chosen is stated to be elevated above other variants of the activity, or lack of the activity, to make the person indulging in it feel special or part of an elite.

This kind of turn to destructive beliefs and behavior can be seen in many group and identity seekings, e.g. when nationalism turns into racism.

Not everyone interested in an activity like BDSM is interested in it as part of seeking identity or group belonging though, or even connecting with others sharing their interest, save for their partner.

Connecting with others with the same interest may be because of a want or need to be able to take part of and share thoughts, concerns and experiences in the area, rather than group belonging.
